Advertising in South Korea
In the late of 20th century South Korea saw a tremendous growth in the advertising industry. However, they were the second largest advertising market in Asia by 2000. In the 1970s and 1980s there was a booming in the economic growth because they have the fastest growth in advertising business at that time. In addition, the country has changed from an agricultural to an industrial society. As well as, the consumer way of spending was reflected by the economic boom and the number of the advertising agencies increased. The advertising in Korea was actually started between 1886 and 1910, where the advertisement were placed in a newspaper that appears in a government gazette and it was more like an announcement than an advertisement. Where the terms of used the advertisement today is not what it was used back then. Furthermore, it took around ten years for Korean advertising to change and develop. Back to 1896 Korea has their first commercial newspaper and it was called the Independent (Tongnip Shinmun in Korean). It was published in both Korean and English three times a week. In the mid of 1930s Korean advertising reached the peak because their was an increasing number of pages per issue and growth in advertising revenue. The Internet and the outdoors media has change and develop the way of advertising product or service and it change to be online more than printing (Moon, Y. S.).
